Today marks the final day for eligible residents in several Florida counties to apply for Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) benefits.
Since November 16, Florida has launched a special assistance program to provide much-needed food aid to individuals and families affected by recent hurricanes.
The program, aimed at those not already enrolled in the regular SNAP program, offers financial relief for those facing hardship caused by the storms.
The D-SNAP program has been operating out of multiple service locations, including the Fasano Regional Hurricane Shelter in Pasco County on Denton Avenue.
If you or someone you know is in need due to hurricane-related disruptions, here’s what you should know about eligibility, how to apply, and where to access services.
What is D-SNAP?
The Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) is a federal program designed to assist individuals and families who have been impacted by natural disasters but do not already receive regular SNAP benefits. This special assistance helps those who have suffered from:
- Income loss due to the disaster
- Damage to or loss of property
- Displacement from their homes
- Food spoilage caused by power outages or flooding
D-SNAP provides short-term financial support to help purchase groceries and essential food items, offering immediate relief in the aftermath of hurricanes.
Who Qualifies for D-SNAP?
The program targets individuals who are not enrolled in regular SNAP benefits but are facing extraordinary disaster-related challenges. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), D-SNAP is available for those experiencing:
- A decrease in income
- Damage to their residence or other property
- Costs related to evacuation, shelter, or other storm-related expenses
Importantly, if you are already receiving SNAP benefits, you should not apply for D-SNAP, as it is intended exclusively for non-SNAP participants who meet the disaster criteria.
How to Apply for D-SNAP
Florida’s Department of Children and Families (DCF) has streamlined the application process by offering online pre-registration.
This step allows potential recipients to start their application before visiting a service location, reducing wait times and ensuring a smoother process. The online portal remains active throughout the event.
Once at the service point, applicants must complete an interview, either in person or by phone. If approved, D-SNAP recipients will receive an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card by mail, enabling them to access funds for food.

Why D-SNAP is Essential Post-Hurricanes
Hurricanes often lead to devastating outcomes, including property destruction, food scarcity, and significant unplanned expenses. Programs like D-SNAP offer vital support to individuals and families who may be cut off from regular supply chains or facing overwhelming financial difficulties.
By providing short-term food assistance, D-SNAP helps bridge the gap during recovery, reducing food insecurity and helping communities rebuild.
To take advantage of this program, eligible residents should ensure timely pre-registration and attend the nearest service location within the designated dates. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to receive support during a challenging time.
